CampusKassel2030

Concepts and measures for the accelerated implementation of the energy transition in universities

Short description

The joint project "CampusKassel2030" addresses the challenges of the energy transition and uses the example of the Kassel university campus "Holländischer Platz" to investigate the prerequisites and implementation options for accelerating the transformation process towards a largely climate-neutral campus by 2030. To this end, several university departments, the university's building department, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE) are working together to develop cross-disciplinary approaches to transforming the campus. The project will:

  • develop energetic technical solution concepts for an energy-efficient university campus in terms of heat supply - specifically considering the necessary existing building measures,
  • integrate economic and behavioral requirements to overcome obstacles to implementation and application
  • summarize the project results in an overall transformation concept including a monitoring and continuation concept and thereby
  • enable the transfer of project results and findings to other publicly owned properties and neighborhoods.

The energy-related technical issues include the planned new natural science buildings on the North Campus, the development of efficiency measures in the existing buildings, such as building renovation and temperature reductions at the building level, and the optimization of the existing local heating network. The Institute of Solar and Systems Engineering is primarily investigating issues relating to this local heating network. It was built in the 1980s and is now to be modernized. This includes the integration of new energy sources such as renewable energies and waste heat from refrigeration machines and the university's own data center, as well as investigations into the reduction of supply and return temperatures on the network side and in the buildings.
