A theoretical and numerical study on the determination of the 3D-structure of the lithosphere by linear and nonlinear inversion of
teleseismic travel times, Geophys. J. R. Astr. Soc, 80, 73 - 93, 1985.
A new 3D nonlinear inversion method including a full nonlinear 3D ray-tracing procedure is developed and applied to the inversion of teleseismic
travel times and it is demonstrated that this method results in much less bias of the inverted structure of the lithosphere than the linear inversion approach used hitherto.

Surface deformation and geoid anomalies over single- and double-layered convective systems, Geophys. Res. Lett., 12, 701 - 704, 1985.
A finite element method is used to model both whole mantle and two-layer mantle convection and the effects of the latter on the topography,
gravity and geoid are studied as a function of the assumed viscosity contrast between the upper and the lower mantle and it is shown how the viscosity
contrast affects these surface signals.

This paper discusses the origins of the difficulties in the numerical modeling of the advection diffusion equation when the advection term
is dominating, presents the development of a new adaptive method of line, applies it to various forms of linear and nonlinear hyperbolic/parabolic flow
problems arising primarily in porous media, presents the development of an inverse optimization method based on a quasi-Newton conjugate gradient method

Ewing, C.A. Brebia, W.A. Gray and G.F. Pinder (eds.), pp. 155 - 162, Computational Mechanics Publications, Southampton, UK, 1992.
The onset and development of hydrodynamic instability and fingering phenomena (Rayleigh-Taylor and Saffman-Taylor instabilities) in
miscible, single phase, density- and viscosity-dependent solute transport in a porous media are studied by means of a mixed method of characteristics/ finite
differences and the results are shown to compare favorably with predictions of a theoretical scaling analysis also developed here.

Finite element analysis of creeping thermal plumes with strongly temperature dependent viscosity, The difficulties and remedies in enforcing the div=0- condition,
Int. J. Num. Meth. Fluids, 18, 189 - 214, 1994.
This paper presents a finite-element analysis of experimentally observed creeping thermal plumes in a medium whose viscosity is strongly
temperature-dependent, shows the numerical deficiencies of the method to model plumes with large viscosity contrasts, namely the inability of the method to
enforce the div=0-condition, and proposes various new developments such as (1) better scaling of the fundamental equations, (2) use of an Augmented
Lagrangian method and, (3) a multistep Newton method which is able to succesfully model the experimentally observed plumes.

The dynamics of density driven finger instabilities in stochastically heterogenous porous media, In: Computational Methods in Water Resources X, A. Peters, G. Wittum, B. Herrling, U. Meissner, C.A. Brebbia, W.G. Gray, and G.F. Pinder (eds.), Vol. 1, pp. 481 - 488, Kluwer Academic Publishers , Dordrecht, 1994.
Using Monte Carlo realizations of the stochastic process for the Y = log K-permeability distribution in a heterogeneous porous medium, the
dynamics and the morphology of density-driven fingers are modeled numerically and it is demonstrated that for the random medium, unlike in a homogenous
medium where the evolution and the morphology of the finger instabilities are mostly affected by the initial instability- perturbation, it is its stochastic
spatial realization that determines the fate of the fingers.

A comparison of a personal computer oil spill model with a Supercomputer model , In: Proceedings of the
Environmental Modeling Seminar, Trondheim, Norway, August, 17-19, 1994, p. 238-258.
Results of oil spill models operating on personal computers are compared to those operating on supercomputers when they are used for emergency
response. The supercomputer model, which is a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model that computes currents using wind and tide predictions as input, appears
to be superior to the PC model in predicting the future oil spill trajectory, particularly if scant observational data on earlier oil movement is available.

IMA volume series in Mathematics and its Applications, vol. 75, I. Babuska,J.E. Flaherty, W.D. Henshaw, J.E. Hopcroft, J.E. Oliger, and T. Tezduyar (eds.), pp. 307 - 346, Springer, New York, 1995.
A new mesh-adaptive collocation technique is presented and applied to the efficient numerical solution of nonlinear single-and multiphase
advection-dominated transport problems in porous media, as they arise in groundwater solute transport and petroleum reservoir modeling. Examples
include, in particular, nonlinear adsorption, two-phase flow with capillary forces and Burgers' equation, all of which are notoriously difficult to solve
by classical methods, but are easily solved by the new adaptive method.

Variations of the salinity in the Apalachicola Bay, Florida, are due to tidal elevation, wind and current velocity, precipitation and discharge
of the Apalachicola River, and directly influence the aquatic habitats and their productivity. ARIMA and dynamic regression transfer models using the
Box-Jenkins methodology and crosscorrelation techniques are employed to analyze the various data time series and show their respective influence on
the salinity in the bay.

A Dupuit-Forchheimer formulation to model contaminant transport in an unconfined aquifer is implemented in the SUTRA transport model, validated, its solutions compared with those obtained from a classical confined aquifer model, and applied to the prediction of remediation times at a real
contaminated site in Florida and it is demonstrated that the new method results in more realistic clean-up times than those predicted by the classical
method.

Linear and nonlinear inversion of teleseismic and local travel times - Application to the seismic zone Vrancea, Romania, (Ph.D.-thesis, in German),
Geophysical Institute, University of Karlsruhe, 275pp., 1983.
New 3D nonlinear inversion methods for both the inversion of teleseismic and of local travel times from earthquakes are developed,
validated by means of numerical simulations and finally applied to determine for the first time the 3D lithospheric structure of the Romanian Vrancea
seismic region and the results are then interpreted in terms of the improved earthquake locations and of the geometry of the subduction zone.
