STARA - STAtistics for All

Statistics is one of the most important fundamentals in the study of civil, transportation and environmental engineering - but for many students it is a major challenge. Different levels of prior knowledge, particularly in dealing with software and programming, make it even more difficult to get started.

This is precisely where the STARA project comes in: The existing course "Statistics for Civil, Transport and Environmental Engineers" is being expanded to include a freely accessible, interactive online tutorial. This enables students to choose between two learning paths depending on their individual level of knowledge and interest - either with the user-friendly statistics software SPSS or via an interactive R tutorial.

The aim is to offer all students low-threshold, application-oriented access to statistics. The focus is not only on teaching the basics, but also on the practical handling of data, a critical understanding of scientific studies and a reflective look at topics such as diversity and gender in data collection.

The teaching concept combines classroom lectures, practical exercises and supervised tutorials with digital learning opportunities. Content can be studied in depth flexibly and from any location - a particular advantage for students with different life realities.

The courses are continuously evaluated and developed together with the students. The result is a modern, inclusive and needs-oriented statistics course that will be anchored in the curriculum in the long term.
