Overview
1. basic information
Rocket.chat is a platform that enables teams to chat in real time. It is primarily used to communicate in groups, clarify questions or exchange information in general - whether for projects, at work or in teaching.
Rocket.chat is suitable for university employees who want to communicate quickly, flexibly and in compliance with the GDPR in projects or organizational units. Students and other people can also gain access, but must first register for activation via a ticket.
It is operated by the IT Service Center on university servers. The ITS is responsible for technical supervision and support.
2. brief description
Rocket.chat enables privacy-compliant, secure communication via text messages, group chats and direct file exchange within the university. Users can set up topic-related discussion channels to simplify collaboration in teams or projects. The platform offers mobile and web-based access, ensuring flexible and location-independent communication.
Zoom is available for synchronous meetings. Moodle forums or e-mail are also suitable for asynchronous collaboration.

Channels (public/private): Structured exchange in teams or specialist groups.
Share files: Upload and share documents directly in the chat.
Mentions & notifications: Address users in a targeted manner.
Apps for desktop & mobile devices: Cross-platform use.
GDPR-compliant: No processing of personal data on external servers.
4th deployment scenario
A specialist group sets up a private channel for a quick exchange on current tasks and questions.
Lecturers use Rocket.chat for discussions with students between seminar dates.

Employees can log in directly with their UniAccount <ukxxxxxx>. Activation or similar is not necessary.
Students and external persons with a UniAccount can also be granted access, for example to work in project groups. To request access, please send an e-mail with a brief explanation to it-servicedesk@uni-kassel.de or use our online form.
Persons without a university account can apply for an external Rocket.chat account. Further information can be found under Access for external users (without UniAccount).

9. special notes (data protection, terms of use)
All data is processed exclusively on the university's own servers. The service complies with the requirements of the GDPR. It is not passed on to third parties.
Use is reserved for members of the university for official, organizational and university-related communication. Rocket.chat is an open source software, provided under the MIT license. The usage guidelines of the IT Service Center apply.
