Presentation of the GEW handout on dealing with abuse of power in higher education and research

Dear colleagues,

Abuse of power is a serious problem that is increasingly attracting institutional and public attention in its many forms. Universities and research institutions, with their strong hierarchies and multiple dependencies, are particularly susceptible to the abuse of positions of power. High levels of dependency, temporary and precarious employment relationships and non-transparent structures encourage the exploitation of power imbalances and at the same time make it more difficult to defend oneself against abuse or unfair treatment. Our declared aim is to support colleagues in recognizing and naming abuses of power and counteracting them both in individual cases and structurally.

A first and important step is the publication of the GEW handout "Recognizing, naming and counteracting abuse of power in higher education and research". It is aimed at anyone who is affected by abuse of power, has observed it or would like to find out more about the topic.
We therefore cordially invite you to the public presentation of this GEW handout on dealing with abuse of power in higher education and research on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 from 17:00 to 18:30! The event will take place online.

We look forward to numerous registrations via this link: https://www.gew.de/veranstaltungen/detailseite/ich-dachte-das-gehoert-einfach-dazu

The handout is available online.

Budget cuts

Dear colleagues,

Against the backdrop of budget cuts, we are facing difficult collective bargaining negotiations (see www.gew-hessen.de/tarifbesoldung/aktuell/details/die-tarifrunde-hessen-2026-steht-vor-der-tuer).

Together we will discuss our demands, strategy and timetable for the collective bargaining round with the state of Hesse.

- On Thursday, October 23, 5-7 p.m. via ZOOM(https://eu01web.zoom.us/j/63153475628?pwd=7bz5GDw7rnmnNWrYHwrUcUlgvR5mnR.1).

- And on Tuesday, November 4, 25: from 6 p.m., Kassel, GEW district office, Friedrich-Engels-Str. 26.

Uni Kassel: A clean slate?

Our survey of demands for the 2026 collective bargaining round has been launched!

What's on your mind at work?
Whether at school, university or another educational institution in the
state of Hesse - your opinion counts!

Tell us what needs to change in terms of collective bargaining policy - simply take part online by September 17:
https://gew-hessen.limesurvey.net/812342?lang=de-informal

The survey is aimed at all employees - student assistants are also welcome to take part.

The results will be incorporated into the demands that we will put forward at the end of November for the 2026 collective bargaining round with the state of Hesse.
It's not about a vote, but about your perspective - so that we know what is important to you!

Please forward the information and the link to the survey - also to colleagues who are not (yet) members of GEW.
Please be fair and only participate once.

Further information on the collective bargaining round can be found on our website https://www.gew-hessen.de/tarifbesoldung/aktuell/details/die-tarifrunde-hessen-2026-steht-vor-der-tuer

Professionals need more - thank you for your support!
