Kassel, 06.01.2020 - The Kassel Science Cafés will kick off the new year next Thursday: "About slime slingers and survival artists" is the title of the current edition of the Kassel Science Cafés event series.

Prof. Dr. Georg Mayer from the Department of Zoology at the University of Kassel will give an insight into the life of stubby-footed animals on 9 January 2020 at 19:00 in the Braumanufaktur Steckenpferd.

Centipedes are invertebrates that are mainly native to the warm forests of the southern hemisphere and look similar to our centipedes. What makes these animals special is their strategy for catching prey: they hurl a sticky mucus that solidifies as soon as the prey they hit tries to free itself by kicking. This biological superglue cannot harm the stubby-footed animals themselves because their skin is coated with a kind of nanostructure. Prof. Dr. Georg Mayer's research not only deals with classic questions of the biology of these interesting animals, but also with questions of materials science and chemistry.
