Freedom and lack of freedom in the food transition

"People want to know what they eat." The Food Report 2024 shows that people in Germany attach great importance to the origin of their food, be it in terms of animal welfare, regionality or organic standards. At the same time, farmers are facing enormous challenges. Rising fertilizer and energy prices as well as unpredictable weather conditions due to climate change are putting a strain on the system. These developments raise key questions. How free are our consumer decisions? What scope for action, freedoms and constraints are there in the production of food? And what could a sustainable and socially just agricultural and food system look like? These questions will be the focus of the interactive discussion event at UNI:Lokal in Kassel.

As part of the event, the Foodlab of the University of Kassel will present a half-hour performance on the topic of "Bread in Process". This will be followed by a panel discussion:

• Prof. Dr. Britta Renner, Professor of Psychology, University of Konstanz, Vice President of the German Nutrition Society and Deputy Chairwoman of the Scientific Advisory Board for Agricultural Policy, Nutrition and Consumer Health Protection
• Prof. Dr. Bettina König, Head of the "Sustainability Management in the International Food Industry" department, University of Kassel
• Tim Treis, farmer from North Hesse and Chairman of the Board of Vereinigung Ökologischer Landbau e.V. (VÖL)
• Ilka Landgrebe, active member of the Kassel and Region Food Council and other initiatives
