Cycling Weeks 2026 launched in Kassel - More than 50 participants at the kick-off event

The Kassel Bicycle Weeks 2026 have begun: More than 50 participants discussed their vision of a bicycle-friendly city in 2036 at the kick-off event on May 5, focusing on issues relating to the role of bicycles in the city and the development of sustainable mobility.

Numerous stakeholders from academia and urban society spoke at the opening. Prof. Dr. Ute Clement, President of the University of Kassel, emphasized that cycling is increasingly perceived as a natural part of everyday life and does not necessarily have to be a political statement. Lord Mayor Dr. Sven Schoeller referred to the change in the cityscape: Kassel is not yet a classic cycling city, but is increasingly developing in this direction.

Dr. Julia Limmeroth, Head of University Sport and research assistant at the Institute of Sport and Sports Science, moderated the event. Together with Dr. Lisa Claußen, she organized the cycling weeks. With questions about personal exercise, health and quality of life, she encouraged those present to reflect and discuss. Prof. Dr. Angela Francke, Head of the Department of Cycling and Local Mobility, emphasized: "The focus should be directed beyond individual campaigns towards the long-term integration of cycling - then cycling weeks will become a cycling year in the future."

Over the next four weeks, the Bike Weeks will offer a wide range of events, discussions and hands-on activities on the topic of mobility. The program includes bicycle tours, discussion events, lectures, city and factory tours as well as the bicycle night.

The Cycling Weeks are an open platform for initiatives, institutions, companies and citizens who are committed to sustainable mobility. The aim is to provide new impetus, strengthen existing networks and make the bicycle visible as a natural part of urban life.

The Cycling Weeks were initiated by a cooperation between the Department of Cycling and Local Mobility and the Institute of Sport and Sports Science and are now taking place for the third time.
