Science as an after-work snack: lectures at UNI:Lokal

Urban climate, universe, tropical plants: The coffee talks at UNI:Lokal will continue in the winter semester 2025/26. In short lectures, researchers from the University of Kassel present their topics to interested members of the public - briefly and compactly and, of course, free of charge. The talks, which last around 15 minutes, are aimed at anyone who wants to start the evening with an interesting input on current topics. Sweet snacks and drinks are also available free of charge. The coffee talks take place centrally in the city center at UNI:Lokal (Wilhelmsstraße 21), on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. from November 26.

To kick off the series on 26 November, Prof. Dr. Britta Jänicke (Department of Environmental Meteorology) will explain how urban climate develops and how a climate measuring network helps Kassel to adapt to increasing heat.

Catherina Merx (Greenhouse for Tropical Crop Plants, Witzenhausen) will take us on a sensory journey into the world of spices and explain the origin and cultivation of tropical spice plants.

In the new year, Prof. Dr. Michael Goller (Department of Vocational and Business Education) will talk about digitalization in work and vocational education and training and the opportunities and challenges it offers.

To conclude the series, visitors will take a trip back in time to the edge of the universe with Dr. Guido Fuchs (Institute of Physics) and look together at things that took place in space a long time ago.

In the UNI:Lokal in the city center, the University of Kassel presents research from the university to a wide audience in line with the motto "Science for everyone" in order to promote exchange between science and the public. In the open space for events and exhibitions, visitors are invited to enter into a dialog with researchers about current scientific topics and to discuss aspects.

The coffee talks also address socially relevant topics that are being researched at the University of Kassel and convey them in a way that is relevant to everyday life. The short lectures show the broad spectrum of research and teaching at the university, which aims to develop solutions for a future worth living.
