Gender in Academia

To this end, it promotes women’s, gender, and diversity studies as well as the integration of results from gender studies to improve the quality of teaching and research in all subjects. The “Gender in Teaching” and “Equal Opportunities Consulting” projects are administered by the Equality Unit.
Women’s and gender studies
Women's and gender studies has a long tradition at the University of Kassel and is a distinguishing feature of the university. Academics have been working together in the Interdisciplinary Working Group for Women's and Gender Studies (IAG FG) since 1987. In 2025, the Competence Center Gender Studies in Transformation was founded and continues the long-standing tradition. It provides a platform for the further institutionalisation and development of gender studies at the University of Kassel. The Competence Center serves as an interface for researchers from various Faculties, promotes young researchers and contributes to the visibility of gender studies within and outside the University of Kassel.
The Competence Center runs the Gender Studies study program. This offers students the opportunity to combine perspectives and methods from different disciplines to analyse gender relations.
