New member appointed to the University Advisory Board of the University of Kassel

Prof. Dr. Martin Sauter is a hydrogeologist and geoscientist with more than 40 years of international research, consulting and teaching experience. Sauter studied geology at the University of Tübingen and hydrogeology at the University of Birmingham (M.Sc. 1981). After various positions in research and consulting, he returned to the Chair of Applied Geology at the University of Tübingen. There he received his doctorate in 1991 on the modelling and characterization of karst aquifers. From 1999, he was Professor of Hydrogeology at the University of Jena. Since 2002 he has been Professor of Applied Geology at the University of Göttingen. His expertise lies in the areas of groundwater protection, characterization of georeservoirs, applied geophysics, geothermal energy, CO₂ storage and integrated water resource management in semi-arid (dry) regions.

Prof. Dr. Sauter has supervised more than 60 doctorates and numerous postdoctoral researchers and coordinated over 120 national and international research projects with a funding volume of more than 25 million euros. He has also published more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, including fundamental work on flow and transport processes in fractured porous media. He is a member of national and international committees and a reviewer for DFG and EU research programs. Sauter also advises international projects in the field of water resource management and geothermal energy.

University President Prof. Dr. Ute Clement commented: "With Prof. Dr. Sauter, we welcome a proven expert in sustainability to the University Advisory Board. We are convinced that the University of Kassel's proven sustainability profile will thus receive new impetus and be strengthened."

Background:

The University Advisory Board accompanies the university in its development, articulates expectations in the professional world and promotes the use of scientific knowledge and artistic achievements. The University Advisory Board has a right of initiative on fundamental matters concerning the university and must approve development planning. It makes recommendations on course planning, evaluation procedures, target agreements, knowledge transfer as well as the appropriate and efficient administration and use of funds. It gives its opinion on the university's basic regulations, statement of accounts, budget planning, the establishment and discontinuation of degree programmes and the division of the university into Faculties. The University Advisory Board consists of up to ten people from business, professional practice and the fields of science and art. The members are appointed by the HMWK and half are nominated by the university and half by the ministry.
