Traveling Abroad with a Child

It is possible to study abroad even if you have a child. Whether it’s a traditional semester abroad, an internship, or a short-term stay, the University of Kassel helps students with family responsibilities plan their experience and provides information on various exchange programs, funding options, and special grants.

Erasmus+

Erasmus+ funds both study abroad programs and internships abroad. In addition to regular Erasmus+ funding, depending on your personal situation, you may apply for additional financial support—such as a top-up grant—or funding through a so-called “actual costs” application. Applications for both types of funding can be submitted to the International Office. Please contact us: erasmus@uni-kassel.de

If your stay abroad with a child or children results in additional costs, a “reality-based cost application” can be used to cover expenses such as additional travel, housing, or childcare costs. Please contact us well in advance so that we can work together to determine which funding options are available to you.

BAföG for Study Abroad

Even if you do not receive BAföG in Germany, you may still be eligible for BAföG abroad. Under certain conditions, benefits for your child may also be taken into account. For more information and an individual assessment, please contact the relevant Studentenwerk.
