2. Changing your name and/or gender at the University of Kassel – Information for students
To promote gender equality for inter*, trans* and non-binary students, it is possible to change the name and gender recorded in the student data at the University of Kassel. The date is changed comprehensively in the database, so the self-chosen name or gender is used for the eCampus, CampusCard, e-mail address, immatriculation certificates, transcripts/reports, etc.
For information on how to request a change of your last name, please see “Application“ below.
Early change of name(s)
Inter*, trans* and non-binary students can request a change of their name(s) at the University of Kassel even before an official change of name or civil status according to the Civil Status Act (Personenstandsgesetz/PStG) or the Transsexuals Act (Transsexuellengesetz/TSG) is concluded. For this purpose, the Supplemental ID from the German Society for Transidentity and Intersexuality (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Transidentität und Intersexualität/dgti e.V.) is mandatory. However, already issued degree certificates can only be altered after the official change of name.
Change of gender
In addition to “male“, „female“ and “non-binary“, the gender specification on the Supplemental ID from the dgti can be freely chosen. If left blank, “/“ will be recorded.
Requirements for changes to your data
To request a change of your first name or gender, the following documents are required:
- Online request to change your first name (see “Application“ below)
- Scan of your ID card or Supplemental ID from the dgti
Supplemental ID from the dgti
As long as the name(s) and civil status of inter*, trans* and non-binary persons could not be changed officially, a discrepancy exists between gender identity and officials documents such as the ID card. This can lead to irritations, difficulties and problems in everday life, when a person has to prove their identity. The Supplemental ID from the dgti is an additional document which contains all self-chosen personal data and a current passport photo. Via the ID card number, the Supplemental ID is unmistakably linked to the ID card. The Supplemental ID from the dgti is accepted by all the Federal Ministry of the Interior, all Ministries of the Interior of the federal states and other ministries and public authorities. The Supplemental ID can be applied for with the German Society for Transidentity and Intersexuality (http://www.dgti.org).
