Dear students,

We are delighted to know that you are interested in spending a semester abroad at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).  

As part of this cooperation arrangement, students from all the faculties at the University of Kassel can study at the UMBC for one semester without having to pay the tuition fees. Depending on your subject, exemption from the tuition fees may be worth approx. $11,000. You can apply for a PROMOS scholarship for further funding for your period of study or apply for BAföG abroad. You will find all the information on the exchange programme existing between the University of Kassel and UMBC on this website. If you have any further questions, please consult the relevant contact partner in your faculty or at the International Office.

Application and selection procedure

You apply to the International Office of the University of Kassel for a tuition-free exchange study place at UNCW. Please submit the application documents (see below) in person, by post or by email (one PDF with all documents to auslandsstudium[at]uni-kassel[dot]de) in full and on time. Only these applications can be considered in the selection process.

An independent committee will decide on the allocation of the study place. You will be informed of the decision by e-mail.

In the event of a positive decision by the selection committee, the selected applicants must confirm acceptance of the study place within a set deadline. The selected students will then be nominated at the partner university. They will check your documents and decide on the nomination. You will be notified by the university regarding admission and other required documents.

For a stay in the coming Fall Term or the following Spring Term (see "Semester periods" above), please apply by 15.11. with all the documents listed below by e-mail to auslandsstudium[at]uni-kassel[dot]de or hand in the documents in person at our information desk.

It is not sufficient to simply complete the online form; an application must be submitted by e-mail or in printed form.

The following documents are required for a complete application:

  • Online application form of the University of Kassel
  • Letter of motivation (in English, max. 2 pages, informal)
    Please address the following points in your letter of motivation:
    • Why do you want to study at UNCW for one semester?
    • Relevance of your stay in relation to your previous/further studies?
    • Brief description of your study plans: Which courses would you like to take?
    • Subject/language preparation for the stay
  • Curriculum vitae (in English, informal)
  • Copy of a valid passport (valid for at least 6 months after the end of the program)
  • Proof of your English language skills (TOEFL 71, IELTS 6.0 or a letter of reference or DAAD language certificate of at least B2)
  • Leistungsübersicht (eCampus) - If you are accepted, you will need a transcript of records with the title of the course/event in English, signed and stamped by your examination office. You can use the "Transcript of Records" template, which you can find in our download area.
