Lecture with Prof. Dr. Christoph Scherrer: "The superfluous: What makes economic development in the Global South so difficult?"

At the 14th Göttingen Academy Week "Working Worlds of the Future?", renowned academics will give lectures on changes in working life and discuss them with the audience. Kassel political scientist Prof. Dr. Christoph Scherrer will give a lecture on September 20 as part of the academy week on the topic "The superfluous: What makes economic development in the Global South so difficult?". The lecture will begin at 6.15 pm in Göttingen's Old Town Hall. Admission is free.

The extent of precarious employment in the Global South is worrying. Can anything be done to change this, or do we have to prepare ourselves for a permanent state of underemployment in economically lagging countries? What influence do the global economy, forms of production and consumer behavior have on the situation in developing countries? Why can the labour market dynamics of the pioneers of industrialization and their few current successful imitators from Southeast Asia not be adopted? These questions will be addressed in the lecture. The speaker will also address demographic change, the restriction of emigration, the colonial legacy and the after-effects of slavery in Africa.
