Jair Bolsonaro, a right-wing extremist, has been elected president in Brazil. This success is quite surprising, as Bolsonaro not only attacked minorities during the election campaign, but also questioned the fundamental rights of the broad majority: Women should go back to the stove, in terms of economic policy, the richest will benefit above all, and the police should be able to take even more violent action against the poor than before.

Why was a candidate with this program able to gain a broad majority? Why has there been such a shift to the right after 13 years of center-left government under presidents Lula and Rousseff? And what consequences can now be expected for Brazil and Latin America as a whole?
