Lecture "The indirect effects of glyphosate through influences on the microbiome"

Prof. Dr. Maria Finckh, Head of the Department of Ecological Plant Protection, will give a lecture on the effects of glyphosate use on living organisms.

The lecture will focus in particular on the indirect effects of glyphosate on the health of plants, animals and humans, including through changes in the composition of microbial communities. Finckh's lecture is an accompanying event to an exhibition by the BUKO Pharma campaign on antibiotic resistance, which can be seen in the foyer of the main auditorium from November 8 to 26. The cooperation partner is the Department of Ecological Agricultural Sciences.

Herbicides such as glyphosate, which are used in agriculture worldwide, are a major problem, says Prof. Dr. Maria Finckh. "Glyphosate is a patented antibiotic and other herbicides also have a similar effect to antibiotics on microorganisms. They create selection pressure, change the microbial composition in the soil, in plants, animals and humans and can lead to resistance to clinically important antibiotic agents." The exhibition could therefore tie in well with the company's own research projects.

Claudia Jenkes from the BUKO Pharma Campaign will take the opportunity to give a brief introduction to the exhibition and also present the campaign's work on the problem of resistance. The Federal Coordination for Internationalism (BUKO) is an umbrella organization to which over 120 development policy groups and organizations belong.
