FoSS: Volunteering for refugees. Learning from 2015

Due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there has been a strong migration of refugees from Ukraine, including to Germany. To overcome the challenges, the focus is on supporting volunteer work. Here, we can draw on experience gained in connection with the summer of migration in 2015. In this context, a completed, empirical-qualitative teaching research project on volunteer support for refugees is of interest. It showed that the gender ratio played a special role in the situation from 2015 onwards. Volunteers also considered fun and respect to be important aspects of their work. Success, gratitude and recognition appeared to be central to understanding. These three dimensions could be transferable to the current situation and could provide starting points for social work that supports volunteering.
