Exhibition opening: New greenery for Kassel's heat islands

Students of the Department of Landscaping, Landscape Management and Vegetation Development at the University of Kassel, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Körner, present their work as part of the FB 06 tour.

Climate change requires cities to adapt to rising temperatures. There is a consensus that more greenery is therefore needed to reduce temperatures in open spaces and buildings and to promote infiltration and evaporation. The latter also requires the unsealing of large areas. The Department of Landscaping, Landscape Management and Vegetation Development therefore took a closer look at the urban heat islands depicted in the climate function map of Kassel with 25 students from Faculty 06 (Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Planning). On the initiative of BUND and in cooperation with the Environment and Garden Agency, they looked for more space for vegetation. Best practice examples were also discussed. The aim was to establish more high-quality greenery in the individual city districts, even under very adverse conditions, depending on the land use and building structure. Locations for climate-resistant tree species, drought-resistant wild herbaceous meadows (fringes, meadows, flowering lawns) or wall greening play a role here. Future maintenance measures were always taken into consideration, as they ultimately determine whether long-term improvements can be achieved. A lively discussion of the proposed solutions with the city's population is expressly encouraged!
