Spotlight: The concept of the picture book workshop

Thinking differently about art didactics

If art lessons are to promote the artistic development of children, this means thinking about art didactics from the perspective of art and education. Contemporary picture book art offers special opportunities in this context. Accordingly, Kirsten Winderlich has developed a concept for teaching picture books in which the respective picture book aesthetics are transferred into the room and staged.
After introductory remarks on the challenge of thinking differently about art didactics and an insight into the concept of the Grundschule der Künste (Primary School of the Arts) at the UdK Berlin, considerations on theoretical cornerstones and foundations follow, which tie in with figures of thought from philosophy and childhood research. Selected examples will illustrate the concept of the picture book workshop and stimulate the subsequent discussion.

Univ.-Prof. Dr. phil. Kirsten Winderlich has been head of the Primary School of the Arts at the UdK Berlin since 2012. Kirsten Winderlich's research focuses on aesthetic education. Accordingly, her academic work moves between children and art, takes questions about children's drawings and the reception of contemporary picture books as a starting point, discusses models of education, space and art and aims to critique education from an aesthetic perspective.
