Exhibition: Pedestrian Zones in Transition | A Look at Kassel's Downtown

Kassel’s pedestrian zone was one of the first in Germany and is now a defining feature of the city center. How has the pedestrian zone evolved from its inception in the 1960s to the present day? Students from the Department of Architecture, Urban Planning, and Landscape Architecture (ASL) at the University of Kassel investigated this question during the summer semester.

The pedestrian zone is a cornerstone of urban planning from the 1960s and 1970s. Since its inception, it has weathered many changes and crises, from smog alerts in the 1990s to the financial crisis of the 2000s. The exhibition focuses on Königsplatz as the central square of the city center, but also examines the development of traffic, individual buildings, and the shops in the pedestrian zone. The exhibition traces the various phases of the pedestrian zone’s development.

The exhibition runs through October 1, 2026. A closing event will take place on September 30, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.
