Exhibition Opening: The Pedestrian Zone in Transition | A Look at Kassel’s Downtown

The exhibition is presented by students from the Institute for Urban Development at the University of Kassel, who spent a semester examining Kassel’s pedestrian zone from various perspectives.

The pedestrian zone is a cornerstone of urban planning from the 1960s and 1970s. Since its inception, it has weathered many changes and crises, from smog alerts in the 1990s to the financial crisis of the 2000s. The exhibition focuses on Königsplatz as the central square of the city center, but also examines the development of traffic, individual buildings, and the shops in the pedestrian zone. The exhibition traces the phases of development of the pedestrian zone.

The exhibition opens on July 22 at 6:00 p.m. with a presentation by the students. Following the presentation, there will be an opportunity for discussion over drinks and popsicles.
The exhibition will be on view through October 1, 2026. A closing event will take place on September 30, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.
