Public Forum: 30 km/h Speed Limit on Major Roads in Kassel

This issue is the subject of heated debate, and not just in Kassel. In many places along major thoroughfares in Kassel, the speed limit has been reduced—sometimes on short stretches of road, and sometimes at night or during specific times of the day. Are the hoped-for goals—such as reducing accidents and noise—being achieved at all? What is the legal framework, what must the city do, and where is the room for discretion? What are the experiences of other cities, and is enforcement even possible?

A public discussion event organized by the North Hesse Transportation Forum, the HNA, and the Department of Transportation Planning and Transportation Systems on Thursday, September 24, at the Campus Center of the University of Kassel will address these and other questions on the topic.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Carsten Sommer, chair of the DVWG BV Nordhessen, will provide a brief introduction to the topic. Jens Peters from the Faculty of Police at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Management and Security in Kassel will explain the legal framework, while Antje Janßen from the planning firm LK Argus Kassel GmbH will discuss the effects of 30 km/h speed limits on major thoroughfares and share experiences from other cities. Simone Fedderke, City Councilor for Climate Action, will explain the implementation in Kassel.
