UNIKAT ideas competition reaches record with 65 submissions

With 65 idea sketches submitted, the University of Kassel's internal UNIKAT ideas competition has seen record participation this year - double the number from the previous year. The university will present the best concepts at the award ceremony in the Science Park Kassel on May 19, 2026.

"The great response shows the outstanding potential for entrepreneurial ideas at our university," says Dr. Oliver Fromm, Chancellor of the University of Kassel. "The lively participation is a clear sign of a vibrant start-up culture at our university."

Reviewers from academia and industry will now evaluate the submitted entries. Each submission receives individual feedback with constructive suggestions for further development - a central component of the competition that goes beyond mere evaluation. The ten best concepts reach the final round and present their approaches to a jury of experts.

The award ceremony will take place on May 19, 2026 in the Science Park Kassel on the campus of the University of Kassel. Prize money totaling 6,000 euros will be awarded to the winners.

"However, the real value lies not only in the financial recognition, but also in the concrete further development of the ideas," emphasizes Gabriele Hennemuth, organizer of the UNIKAT ideas competition. "Many start-ups have formulated their first idea for the first time as part of this competition. For many, it is the first step towards an entrepreneurial future. The competition gives the teams the opportunity to network and become part of the start-up community."

The submissions come from almost all Faculties at the university. Economics, the School of Art, Organic Agricultural Sciences, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science are particularly well represented. Proposals were also submitted from the Faculties of Human Sciences, Humanities and Cultural Studies, Social Sciences, Architecture - Urban Planning - Landscape Planning, Mechanical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering and the University of Kassel's Department of Civil Engineering.

The UNIKAT ideas competition is supported by the Kasseler Sparkasse, Hessen Trade & Invest, the Unternehmerverband Nordhessen, the VDI, the Techniker Krankenkasse and the Science Park Kassel.
