Kassel cycles: May 2026 is all about cycling culture

The University of Kassel is transforming the city into a center for sustainable mobility in May. For the third time, the "Cycassel" initiative (Institute of Sports Science and Department of Cycling) is organizing the "Kassel Bicycle Weeks". For one month, citizens can learn about new cycling concepts and get active themselves during campaigns in the city.

The public opening ceremony starts on May 4 at 6 p.m. in the SDG+ Lab (UNI:Lokal, Wilhelmsstraße 21). A central component of the month of action are student projects and initiatives from urban society that show how the bicycle can be strengthened as an everyday means of transportation.

Dr. Julia Limmeroth, research assistant at the Sports Institute, emphasizes: "The Bike Weeks are an important signal and show what can happen when all stakeholders work together to create an enriching community experience. The atmosphere in recent years has simply been great."

Prof. Dr. Angela Francke from the Department of Cycling and Local Mobility is also enthusiastic: "This is an outstanding example for the region, and the vision of Kassel as a cycling city can be discussed and lived here - the bicycle is everywhere during these weeks! The joint commitment with urban society in particular makes it clear from how many different perspectives the topic of cycling can be thought about and implemented."

Program and participation

All details about the program and a short film about the initiative are available at cycassel.org. A fundraising campaign at gofundme.com/f/kasseler-radwochen-2026 provides financial support for the implementation of the Cycling Weeks.

The Bike Weeks serve as an open platform for institutions, companies and citizens. With numerous opportunities to join in, they strengthen regional networks and establish the bicycle as a natural part of urban life.
