UNI:Lokal

The UNI:Lokal is a central and open venue and exhibition space in Kassel's city center.

With this offer in Kassel's pedestrian zone, the University of Kassel aims to strengthen its connection to the city's society. With a varied program of exhibitions and events, citizens are invited to enter into a dialogue about current research topics and to discuss aspects. At UNI:Lokal, prospective students can also find out about the wide range of study programmes on offer at any time. With the SDG+ Lab, the regional sustainability laboratory of UniKasselTransfer has moved into the premises as a player.

New exhibition: Werk - Stoff - Idee | Materials research from the University of Kassel

Discover the future of materials! Our new exhibition presents innovative materials that are the subject of research at the University of Kassel. Plastic, metal, wood, concrete - we invite you to get to know materials from a new perspective.

The exhibits show solutions for a sustainable future: innovative processing and resource-saving recycling make materials fit for the world of tomorrow. Materials are becoming smart - they produce electricity, pass on information, change their shape or adapt to their environment.

Try out these smart functions for yourself - at hands-on stations and in workshops. For all those who want to know more: Researchers will explain more about the topics presented in short talks and during guided tours.

There is also plenty for children and young people to discover, marvel at and experiment with. On a Carrera track, you can control a racing car with smart materials. In the digital detective game, materials will put you on the right track. School classes are also cordially invited to experience the exhibition in a special program consisting of a guided tour and hands-on activities.

New exhibition from April 23: "SDG+ Challenge: Achieving more together!"

The exhibition presents the ongoing projects of the challenge teams in the theme year "Transformation of work and the economy".

Since November 2025, eight challenge teams have been working on and researching co-creative and cooperative solutions for a Kassel oriented towards the common good. The spectrum ranges from a campus-based alternative for IKEA to the establishment of participatory citizen media or the further development of an "open textile workshop" to a cooperation between the universities of Kassel and Yaoundé (Cameroon) in the context of plastic recycling. The exhibition provides insights into the current projects and processes and will be officially opened on April 23!

SDG+ Lab

One player in UNI:Lokal is the laboratory for sustainability issues. Together, we address the major sustainability issues of our time. From 2023 to 2027, the SDG+ Lab will bring together science, business and society and develop impulses and concrete solutions for a sustainable region of Kassel and North Hesse along the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

Lecture series in summer semester 2026 | "Anything to do with sustainability?" Career prospects in the sustainability sciences

What actually comes after studying sustainability science?
In this lecture series, we explore the diverse career opportunities in sustainability science - from NGOs and research institutions to the private sector.
We exchange ideas directly with practitioners from science, civil society, politics and business, discuss current challenges and develop an understanding of the skills that are in demand in different professional fields. This is not just about job profiles, but also about key skills and the real working conditions in various sustainability contexts.
The special feature: Students from the University of Kassel are actively involved in shaping this lecture series! In working groups, they take responsibility for the organization, invite guests, set content priorities and gain practical experience in project management and collective decision-making.
This lecture provides an insight into the diversity of sustainability-related tasks and professional fields in business, administration and civil society. It is career orientation, networking and project work all in one - and offers students and prospective students the opportunity to gain an impression of how and where they would like to apply their sustainability skills later on.

The events take place every Tuesday from April 14, 6-8 p.m. c.t., in the UNI:Lokal. The series is organized by the Kassel Institute for Sustainability.
