Introduction and start of studies

The most important dates and offers for the start of your studies

There is not just one introductory event at the University of Kassel. Rather, there is an extensive range of different "organizers":

  • On the one hand, the departments offer an official program. This type of introduction is about the subject: What is the subject about? What specializations are offered in Kassel? Which Professors and subject areas determine the content? So: be sure to attend and ask questions!
  • For some (not all) degree programs and subjects, we recommend attending preliminary courses. Pre-courses are aimed at first-year students who would like to refresh their knowledge in certain subjects. The preliminary courses start before the introductory dates.
  • The student councils often also offer introductory events. The student council is part of the student self-organization and deals with the specific questions of the students of a department. In terms of content, it deals with questions about the course of studies, the organization of the curriculum, learning organization and examinations. The student councils therefore offer help on how best to study this subject.
  • There are also "welcome events": First semester welcome, offers for students with children, offers for international students.

Important terms explained

Monday, October 5, 26

Time: starting at 10:00 a.m.
Location: Moritzstr. 18 Campus Center – Lecture Hall 2
Welcome by the Dean of Academic Affairs, Prof. Tuider

During the orientation tutorial, you and other first-year students will be guided by two experienced students. These experienced students will provide you with information and advice on all matters important for a successful start to your studies, such as:

  • Which courses can and should I take in my first semester?
  • What exactly are seminars? What is the difference between a preparatory course, a lecture, a seminar, and a tutorial?
  • How do I create my course schedule?
  • What are module examination regulations?
  • How do I find my way around campus? Where can I find my seminar room, lecture hall, library, or cafeteria?
  • How do I log in to the university’s Wi-Fi? How do I set up my university email account?
  • What academic requirements must I meet in lectures, seminars, and tutorials? What exactly are coursework and exam requirements?

In addition, the orientation sessions give you the opportunity to get to know the university and the city of Kassel together with other first-year students.

Experience shows that friendships formed during the orientation days often last a whole (academic) lifetime.

The department introduces itself

A warm welcome to you!
We are delighted that you have decided to study at the University of Kassel and, in particular, a subject from our Department of Social Sciences.
We have compiled the essential information for a good start to your studies on the university's study information pages.
At the beginning of your studies, orientation days are held in the form of orientation tutorials ("O-Tutorien" for short). Here you will learn everything you need to know to start your Bachelor's or teacher training course at Faculty 05 - Social Sciences.
The O-Tutorials are led by experienced students from higher semesters. They will accompany you as you embark on this new stage (of your life)!
If there is anything else that is unclear to you, please get in touch with your questions.
