Panel discussion: Brazil after the elections: A return to military dictatorship?

Brazil has voted. An enormous political polarization between reactionary and progressive parties was already evident during the election campaign. For example, supporters of the far-right candidate Jair Messias Bolsonaro portrayed German National Socialism as a "left-wing ideology" in order to discredit progressive parties.

At the same time, Brazil is characterized by economic and social instability and political and legal crises. These have been highlighted not least by the imprisonment of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Workers' Party (PT), as well as countless strikes in the public sector, oil workers and nationwide blockades by truck drivers.

In the meantime, Jair Bolsonaro has been elected president of the country. He has already announced that he will appoint military officers, representatives of evangelical groups and politicians already involved in corruption cases to various ministries. A wave of hatred, fear and violence is sweeping Brazil, while Bolsonaro's supporters are pinning their hopes on the country's economic recovery.

- Can Brazil really stabilize economically?
- What prospects do trade unions and social movements have in this context?
