Lecture in the tropical greenhouse in Witzenhausen: Biodynamic vegetable breeding

Michael Fleck, Managing Director of Kultursaat e.V. in Echzell, reports on the work of the non-profit association, which researches, maintains and develops varieties. The 30 or so breeders at Kultursaat work on the preservation and further development of seed-resistant vegetable varieties suitable for organic cultivation. In doing so, they make an indispensable contribution to the preservation and further development of the biological diversity of our vegetables. Colorful, richly shaped vegetables are not only pleasing to the eye and improve our quality of life, but are also a key element in our food security.
Breeders develop four to eight GMO-free variety candidates every year and register them with the Federal Plant Variety Office. Kultursaat is now responsible for just over 120 new varieties. Variety development is an ongoing balancing act between the requirements of commercial cultivation, the necessary uniformity for official approval and the appropriate handling of the plant.
After the lecture, there will be an opportunity to look at some varieties together with the vegetable gardener Cathrin Merx and Michael Fleck in the teaching and learning garden.
