Career prospects

A Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy opens up a wide range of career prospects for graduates. They are thus excellently qualified for a successful career start in the following areas, among others:

• Clinical facilities, healthcare facilities
• Counseling centers or independent counseling
• Research & teaching in the field of psychotherapy research

The new licensing regulations for psychotherapists were passed in September last year. According to this, psychotherapeutic training can only be started with a corresponding course of study approved by the state examination office with a licensing examination. This applies to all students who have started their Bachelor's degree in Psychology since winter semester 20/21. If you have started or already completed your Bachelor's degree before then, you still have until 2032 to complete your psychotherapeutic training under the "old" system (Bachelor's + Master's + training with license to practice at the end of training).

Your professional title after licensure is psychotherapist. After the licensing examination, you can obtain recognition under social law through further training in a psychotherapy procedure. This is a prerequisite, for example, to be able to work as a psychotherapist to the full extent (with a registered practice). In further training, you specialize either in the treatment of children and adolescents, adults or in neuropsychology and in at least one psychotherapy method, i.e. behavioural therapy, depth psychology-based psychotherapy, analytical psychotherapy or systemic therapy. You will then be called, for example, "Specialist psychotherapist for children and adolescents (behavioral therapy)".

Please note: If, after completing the M.Sc. in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, you wish to take up psychological psychotherapy training, the possibilities depend on the state examination office in which you wish to do your psychotherapy training (psychological psychotherapist or child and adolescent psychotherapist).

Please contact the relevant state examination office in advance to find out which training you can undertake (list of state examination offices) . The state in which you would like to begin training as a psychological psychotherapist is responsible. Please state both your Bachelor's degree and your future Master's degree in the preliminary inquiry. Please obtain the information in writing and keep it until the licensing examination.
