Ranking: University of Kassel top in civil engineering

The ranking appeared in the study guide of the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit" on May 3, 2022, and cites data and survey results from students of selected bachelor's degree programs. According to the study guide, "Civil Engineering" was ranked among the best in Germany (the ranking does not indicate specific places). In all eleven categories, the students rated the conditions at the university in northern Hesse as above average, from the courses offered to the support and academic relevance.

The related bachelor's program in environmental engineering, which places a stronger emphasis on sustainability, also scored above average. Among other criteria, it was well rated for its digital courses. The Psychology program also received above-average positive ratings from Kassel students. Here, the assessment of the study organization stands out in particular. The Mechatronics program scored well for the equipment of the internship labs, among other things.

Very good structures for first-year students

All subjects in Kassel scored outstandingly in terms of support for first-year students. Here, the University of Kassel consistently makes it into the top group thanks to an extensive range of pre-courses, advising, introductory events and other formats.

"I am very pleased that the Civil Engineering program has repeated its top result from three years ago," said Vice President for Studies and Teaching Prof. Dr. René Matzdorf. "The fact that we have created extensive and meaningful structures for our first-year students is also honoured by the CHE ranking. Everyone who takes up a course of study with us gets support for a good start. That pays off over the entire course of their studies."

Matzdorf emphasized the value of such rankings. "We collect data ourselves on the study conditions at our university, but third-party evaluations are a good addition and give us valuable information. We are pleased with successes and can readjust in areas that may not score as well. All of this helps us to continually keep the quality of our degree programs high."

Prof. Dr. Matthias Gaßmann, Dean of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, added: "In the past years, which were marked by the pandemic, we were faced with the challenge of further developing our teaching in the direction of digital offerings without neglecting the practical relevance. We are very pleased that this result confirms our efforts."
