Part-time study

Ability to study a degree programme part-time

Students pursue their studies with different time commitments for different reasons. The subject-specific student advice services offer advice on whether and how degree programmes designed for full-time study can be studied with less time commitment and what needs to be taken into account. In view of limited time resources, it is very important to plan your studies with a view to academic success.

For some students with a considerably limited time budget, enrolment for part-time study as a formal enrolment status can also be useful. In the technical sense, 'part-time study' refers to an individually requested form of study in which formally only half of the specified coursework can be completed per semester. The basis for this is §19 Para. 2 of the Hessian Higher Education Act in conjunction with §9 of the Hessian Matriculation Ordinance. The formal reasons for part-time enrollment are also specified there (see below). During part-time studies, you will take part in the regular courses listed in the course catalog. This means that there is no separate timetable and no courses at special times for part-time students.

Once you have completed and signed the application for part-time study (see application form on this page) and added the supporting documents, you can submit it in person or by post to the Student Information Office. You can submit the application for part-time study repeatedly. Please note that you cannot apply for part-time study retroactively for semesters that have already been completed.

Study and examination regulations

It is essential that you clarify with the subject-specific student advice of your subject or your responsible examination office whether the part-time studies do not conflict with regulations or practical requirements of the respective study and examination regulations (which may be mandatory). This may also apply to individual phases of your studies in which a certain amount of time cannot be avoided (e.g. thesis, practical phases / internships). Please also ask your subject-specific student advice or the Examinations Office whether there are any extensions to relevant deadlines due to your part-time studies. The Hessian Matriculation Ordinance excludes the possibility of extending the deadlines for theses; please consider any consequences of part-time study for your Federal Students Assistance Act (BAföG), your child benefit or the duration of your student health insurance and, if applicable, your residence permit! Please clarify the effects of part-time study on the specified benefits with the relevant office.

    FAQs

    Part-time study offers you two main advantages:

    1. During part-time studies, you will only be charged for one study semester for two part-time semesters. At the end of your studies, the total duration of study in study semesters better reflects the time you were able to invest in your studies.
    2. Part-time study can be advantageous if your study regulations require you to complete examinations or achieve a certain minimum number of points within a certain period of time. In this case, part-time study may result in extensions to deadlines. Please clarify any relevant questions directly with your subject-specific student advice or the Examinations Office.

      Depending on the individual situation, the status of part-time study can entail the following disadvantages, among others, so that individual clarification with the responsible authorities is strongly recommended:

      1. Loss of entitlement to Federal Students Assistance Act BAföG);
      2. Possible effects on social benefits (e.g. orphan's pension);
      3. effects on the residence status of foreign students;
      4. Effects on health insurance;
      5. Loss of the opportunity to work as a working student;
      6. for parents, tax aspects and entitlement to child benefit.
        • Part-time study is only possible in degree programmes that are not subject to admission restrictions.
