Deregistration

If you wish to end your studies at the University of Kassel or change your place of study, you need to deregister. Deregistration is usually carried out at the end of  the semester in which the degree certificate has been handed over. However, students can be deregistered any time if they request it.

Cancellation of enrolment

If you have just newly enrolled at the University of Kassel, but do not wish to take up your university place, you can cancel your enrolment.

How can I de-register?

Students are automatically deregistered from the university if they do not properly re-register. Deregistration occurs automatically at the end of the current semester on the grounds of “failure to re-register.” Affected students will be notified of their de-registration via email shortly before the end of the respective semester (end of March/end of September).

At that time, a “Certificate of Deregistration” will also be available for download in the eCampus Self-Service portal under “My Studies → Student Services → Certificates” for up to 30 days after the end of the semester in which the withdrawal occurs. This certificate is intended for submission to government agencies (including as proof to the pension insurance provider) or as proof of enrollment periods for other universities.

An automatic deregistration applies to you if (at least) one of the following conditions applies:

  • You have not paid the semester fee.
This is the simplest way to complete the deregistration even without submitting an application (see 2.) if you wish to end your studies at the University of Kassel. This form of deregistration will not result in any disadvantages for you. In this case, please ignore all emails asking you for re-registration or reminding or urging you to do so.

However, if you wish to withdraw before the end of the semester or need a certificate of deregistration early, please follow the instructions under “2. Deregistration upon Request.”
  • You have successfully completed your studies during the current semester.
In this case, the reason for withdrawal changes from “failure to complete re-registration” to “completion of studies after passing the final examination, finals,” provided that the final examination, finals, have already been recorded in eCampus prior to deregistration.

If it has not yet been recorded, you can have it changed retroactively as described under “2. Deregistration upon Request.”

  • You have lost your eligibility to take exams.
You have “definitively failed” a course and therefore cannot continue in the degree programme. If you do not apply for a change of program, you will be automatically deregistered from the university.
  • Your re-registration is blocked

You can find more information on this here: https://www.uni-kassel.de/uni/studium/im-studium/rueckmeldung under “Re-registration Blocks and Obstacles”

You can apply for deregistration online via eCampus at the University of Kassel. To do so, log in to eCampus and go to “My Studies → Applications” via the menu in the upper left corner.

To submit a request for deregistration, click on “Deregistration.” Then select the option to create a new application and fill out the following pages. Once you have submitted your application, it will have the status “Application submitted online,” and you can find it under the “My Submitted Applications” overview.

Deregistration takes effect on the requested date or, unless you have requested otherwise, at the end of the current semester. The semester in which the withdrawal occurs counts as an academic or university semester. Retroactive deregistration is not possible!

Once your application has been processed, its status will change to “Approved,” and a “Certificate of Deregistration” will be made available to you in the eCampus Self-Service portal. This certificate will be available for download under “My Studies → Student Services → Certificates” for up to 30 days after the end of the semester in which the deregistration takes effect.

This certificate is intended for submission to government agencies (including as proof to the pension insurance provider) or as proof of enrollment periods for other universities.

Please log in to eCampus regularly to check the status of your application. Any changes will be displayed on the homepage under “My Notifications.”

If you have any questions, please contact the Student Information Office at +49 561 804-2205 or studieren[at]uni-kassel[dot]de.

Refund of the Semester Fee

If you submit your application for deregistration by April 30 at the latest (online submission received by the Admissions Office) or by October 31 at the latest, your semester fee may be refunded.  If you submit your application later than these dates, a refund (including a partial refund) is not possible. To receive a fee refund, have your Campus Card deactivated as soon as your application for deregistration has been approved. Alternatively, you can mail your card to the following address (P.O. Box): University of Kassel – Admissions Office – 34119 Kassel.

Please note that the refund may take 4–6 weeks to process.

If you wish to successfully complete your degree program, you cannot deregister from the university until you have fulfilled your final academic requirement, because you must be enrolled to take exams (module exams). The final examination (bachelor’s or master’s thesis, final colloquium) also counts as an academic requirement. (Special case: 1st State Examination—see below).

The relevant date is the date of the last exam you took. You can find out what that date is or will be from your respective examining office. Waiting for the results is irrelevant in this regard and does not require enrollment. After taking the last exam, you can deregister from the university immediately upon request (see “2. Deregistration Upon Request”) or at the end of the semester.

What happens if I fail my last exam?

If, contrary to expectations, you do not pass your final exam, your deregistration can be canceled and your enrollment reinstated.

Please contact us via email at studieren[at]uni-kassel[dot]de as soon as possible after the exam results are announced. Attach a transcript to your email showing that you did not pass the final exam.

Special case 1st state examination

The examinations for the first state examination (only for teaching degree programs L1-L3 and L5) are not part of the degree program. Enrolment is not required. Exmatriculation is possible after the end of the last module examination.
