With a number of projects, the Free University of Berlin was the first German university that implemented systematic tracer studies as part of its institutional research. The projects have been carried out from 2005 to 2007 in close cooperation with the International Centre for Higher Education Research Kassel.

The sub-projects were the FU graduates Panel 95 (for this survey, the questionnaire of the CHEERS project of INCHER-Kassel was used) and FU-graduates in 2000 (participating as a special study in the REFLEX project of INCHER-Kassel). Furthermore, the Free University of Berlin has been project partner in the GRADUA2 project. In May 2006, a joint meeting of the Rectors' Conference, the INCHER-Kassel and the Free University of Berlin on the topic "Potentials of graduate studies for the academic development" took place in Kassel.
