Previous studies provide us with rich information on how ERASMUS Programme has affected universities. International cooperation and information exchange between institutions (e.g. thematic networks, joint work, curriculum development, etc.) and international mobility of students and researchers are valuable outcomes of the Programme. The link between such effects and excellence, however, requires a more rigorous analysis.

Project objectives

This study examined whether and how ERASMUS has contributed to excellence in European higher education and suggested how ERASMUS could further its role in higher education excellence.  
More specific objectives were the following:  

  • Develop a sound framework of how ERASMUS contributes to higher education excellence, including a rigorous causal link between mobility/internationalisation and higher education excellence.
  • Evaluate the extent to which ERASMUS contributes to
  • modernisation of universities in terms of services and operational management (e.g. student services, international cooperation strategies, decision making),
  • academic learning environment (e.g. modernisation of curricula and quality of teaching),
  • effective work force, with necessary “hard” and “soft” skills,
  • preparing well-rounded citizens with social responsibilities,
  • quality culture’ in universities.

The project was coordinated overall by CHEPS with the three partners (INCHER-Kassel, CHEPS and ECOTEC) all responsible for particular parts and tasks within the study.
