"Democracy Days" at the University of Kassel

It often seems to be taken for granted that science generates truth and that democracy is bound to truth. But what happens when, in the age of 'fake news' and 'alternative facts', the boundaries between truth and untruth, between fact and fake, between knowledge and opinion become blurred? When a lot is meant and nothing is known, democracy is in danger. A series of events at the University of Kassel is dedicated to this area of tension between knowledge, truth and democracy. It is open to all interested students.

The Democracy Days 2025 use interactive formats to explore the role of science in a democracy, the significance of opinions in democratic discourse and how opponents of democracy exploit the fragility of knowledge and truth. The aim is to create spaces in which opinion-forming is reflected upon, scientific approaches are questioned and democratic discussion cultures are strengthened. From November 25-27, the events will address these questions in various formats. The days will be accompanied by a supporting program: an opening event in the Gießhaus, a cinema event and a big party-cipationat the end.

The series of events was largely co-organized by student teachers and takes a close look at the relationship between democracy and schools. Nevertheless, it is open to all interested students.
