Brown-bag-Lunch: The disciplinary imperative: How scientists are evaluated by their peers
We study what determines whether scientists are admitted as members of a scientific disciplines by their peers, a process we refer to as accreditation. Using information on 50,000 individual applicants for the national scientific qualification in Italy, we explore the role of disciplinary fit, previous academic track record, and candidate-panel overlap in informing successful accreditation, and identify relative biases by peer evaluation panels.
