Paedagogische Beziehungen - Annual Conference of the Commission for Professional Research and Teacher Education (DGFE congress)
Image: Sonja RodeWe live in a complex network of relationships and interactions that shape our identity and ability to act. In the school context, educational relationships, teacher-student relationships, and teacher-student interactions are considered essential for subject-specific and cross-curricular educational processes. Questions of professionalism and professionalization of teachers therefore always refer to questions of the design and experience of educational relationships. Successful relationships can promote self-esteem, motivation to perform, and the social well-being of students and teachers. Conversely, relationships can negatively influence the learning environment and the development of students and place stress on teachers through aggressive actions, disregard for boundaries, or a lack of appreciation.
As a central element of educational work, pedagogical relationships influence teachers' job satisfaction and self-image as well as the individual development of students. They are subject to various individual and institutional conditions and ethical requirements and are embedded in processes of social change. As a subject that is both practically significant and empirically researched, the educational relationship is also linked to normative concepts and controversial ideas of ‘good’ education, ‘good’ childhood, and ‘teacher personality’. As a research topic, relationships can be approached in a variety of ways from a professional theory perspective, e.g., against the backdrop of structural theory, competence-related, or biography-related approaches.
Pädagogische Beziehungen (= Relationships in Education) is organized by the Commission 'Professions Research and Teacher Education' of the German Society for Educational Science in cooperation with the University of Kassel. The conference invites participants to discuss the results of ongoing and completed research as well as experiences from schools and teacher education.
