Lecture "Digital animism: Our communication with artificial agents

As part of the Institute Colloquium on Philosophy, we cordially invite you to a highly topical lecture that is of great interest beyond the boundaries of philosophy:

Prof. Dr. Thomas Fuchs, renowned Karl Jaspers Professor for Philosophical Foundations of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the University of Heidelberg, will speak on the topic:

Digital Animism: Our Communication with Artificial Agents

The talk will address central questions in the field of tension between philosophy, psychiatry and technology:

  • Does artificial intelligence have a consciousness?
  • Can a chatbot understand me?
  • Am I the same as an algorithm?
  • How will we still be able to distinguish artificial agents from humans?

Prof. Fuchs combines findings from neuroscience, psychiatry and phenomenological philosophy in his research. His publication Defense of Man (2020) is one of the most influential contributions to critical anthropology. His new work Embodied Feelings (2024) has just been published, which deals with affectivity and interaffectivity - topics that are also of central importance for dealing with AI.

An inspiring opportunity to think about our future with AI across disciplinary boundaries - for all students, teachers and interested parties from philosophy, psychology, media studies, computer science, sociology and beyond.

We look forward to seeing you there!
