Lateral entry into a higher study semester

This page will help you with the following questions: Where can I have my study/examination achievements recognized? Which professional skills are recognized? Where do I apply for lateral entry?

Recognition of achievements

Recognition of your previous study and examination achievements (Bachelor/Master)

Detailed information on the eligibility of coursework and examinations for credit transfer can be obtained from the respective examination office of your Faculty. The contact details of the responsible examination office can be found on the website of the respective degree program.

As the recognition of study and examination achievements can take some time, it is advisable to apply for enrolment at the same time.

Continuing your studies
If you have interrupted your studies at the University of Kassel and would like to resume them in the same degree program, we need a certificate of study progress or the notice of exmatriculation from the University of Kassel.

Recognition of achievements in the teacher training program

Lateral entry into a teacher training program L1-L3 and L5 with recognition of already completed coursework is possible if:

  • another teacher training program has already been started or completed from which coursework or examinations can be credited.
  • the same teacher training course has already been started at another university (change of study location).
  • another degree program has been started or completed from which coursework or examinations can be credited.
Coursework and/or examinations already completed can be credited for the educational and social science core study program and for the subjects.

The Hessian Teachers' Academy is responsible for the recognition of completed coursework.

Unlike starting a teacher training course, lateral entry to a teacher training course is possible in both the summer and winter semesters. For entry in the summer semester, at least one semester must be credited in at least one subject.

Recognition of professional skills

Students who have completed relevant vocational training and/or a phase of professional practice or similar prior to their studies can apply to the relevant examination board for recognition of equivalent knowledge and skills acquired outside of universities after enrolment. The contact details of the responsible examination office can be found on the website of the respective degree program.

When examining this application, the equivalence of the professional qualification with the skills to be acquired at the University of Kassel will be assessed. Recognition can only be granted if equivalence is established. The Examination Board will issue a decision on possible recognition. Placement in a higher study semester is possible on the basis of this decision.

By resolution of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK), the upper limit for credits is a maximum of 50% of a degree program. As the vocational qualifications are more practice-oriented and the skills to be acquired through the course are more theoretical in nature, a significantly lower proportion of credits should be expected. This also applies to the "Bachelor/Master Professional" vocational qualifications.

Procedure

Where and when do I apply for lateral entry?

Career changers or degree program interruptors who wish to resume their studies after a break must apply regularly for a place in the respective higher study semester with their university account in eCampus by the respective deadlines. You do not need to register for a new semester.

In addition to the application, you will also need recognition of your study and examination achievements. If this is not yet available at the time of application, you do not need to provide proof that you have applied for recognition of your coursework and examinations. The responsible Examination Office will automatically send the notification to the Admissions Office once the recognition procedure has been completed. You will receive a copy of this.

Important: Transfer the semester fee in advance
Applications can only be processed once you have transferred the semester fee (re-registration).

Procedure for admission to a higher study semester in an admission-restricted degree programme/subject

In the case of an admission-restricted degree program or subject, you will go through the regular procedure and require admission.

It is recommended that you

  • apply for the higher semester and
  • for the 1st study semester
(only possible in the winter semester).

If admission for the 1st study semester and later recognition by the Faculty's Examination Office is granted, placement in the higher semester will be made retrospectively. If there are fewer places available than there are applications, the decision will be made by drawing lots.

After admission, you can then enrol. The link to the enrollment application will be sent with your admission. Students of the University of Kassel re-register.

If no credits are transferable, access to degree programs with restricted admission is only possible by applying for a study place in the 1st study semester.
