FAQ's for the admission to the Master Psychology (PO2020)

The examination board of the Institute of Psychology will decide on the basis of your

1. knowledge of methods:
   • detailed knowledge of statistics
     (only descriptive statistics is not sufficient)
   • at least one empirical practical course / experimental practical course 
   • detailed knowledge of diagnostics
     (not only focused on one special field (personnel, clinical))
2. Basic modules:
   • General Psychology I + II + Biological Psychology
   • Developmental psychology
   • Social psychology
   • Differential psychology and personality psychology
3. Application Subjects:
   • Clinical psychology
   • Educational Psychology
   • Industrial and Organizational Psychology / Business Psychology

If you lack one of the basic or applied subjects, you may still be admitted as equivalent. The equivalency exam is based on the 8 (+-2) credits per module recommended by the DGPs.

If you do not meet the required prerequisites for our program, you cannot be admitted. Our examination regulations do not allow for conditional admission. Unfortunately, making up modules externally in other degree programs or at other universities does not remedy this shortcoming, as usually your degree does not change. However, if you obtain a different degree through these additional courses, reapply with this new degree.

This is an admission-restricted degree program. You can improve your grade for the admission procedure by a total of 0.6. There are two prerequisites to be met for this, the fulfillment of one of these prerequisites improves by 0.3 in each case. Firstly, if.

1. the following four focal points have been completed in the prerequisite course of study to the extent of at least 6 ECTS each:

a.      Educational psychology

b.      Clinical psychology

c.      Industrial, organizational, and/or business psychology

d.      Environmental psychology

and on the other hand, if

2. the teaching in the prerequisite course of study has been carried out in accordance with the quality standards of the professional society Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie (DGPs) (evidenced by the DGPs seal of quality for B.Sc. psychology courses).

No. A study ability test was available for the Master's program in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy according to the examination regulations (PO) 2014. 

It is sufficient to submit the application documents in simple form. However, it is important to note that you must attach separate application forms for each degree program you are applying for.

When submitting your application, you must currently be able to prove at least 80% of your total credits (e.g. 144 ECTS of 180 ECTS). Please use the document "Bescheinigung zum Stand im Studium für die Bewerbung zum Masterstudium an der Universität Kassel" provided by the University of Kassel as proof. With the grade noted there, you will enter the selection process. 

If you still have open modules or your Bachelor thesis is not yet evaluated, this has no influence on your chances of admission. You can currently provide proof of your complete Bachelor's degree certificate by January 15 of the following year. Please send it to: studieren[at]uni-kassel[dot]de. On the part of the University of Kassel it is possible to be enrolled parallel in another university (e.g. own bachelor university). Please consult with the other university to see if it is possible from their side.

Note: At the time of enrollment or at the latest by 30.09.22 you have to prove the registration for the bachelor thesis!

You cannot officially attend any lectures of an admission-restricted program should you not be enrolled in that program.

You could arrange with the respective lecturer that you are allowed to attend the lecture as soon as there is enough space. However, you will not be able to take any examination or course credit. The attendance of the course will not be confirmed to you.

At a restricted-admission Master's program in Kassel, all applicants apply equally with their procedural grade. In the Master's program, there is no possibility to apply via a second degree.

All of the Institute of Psychology's degree programs are accredited.

You are allowed to use the title "Psychologist" after completing your Master's degree. This is not a protected title, so it is not relevant which bachelor's degree you have previously obtained.

If you wish to take up psychological psychotherapy training after completing your M.Sc. in Psychology, the options available to you since acourt ruling https://www.bverwg.de/pm/2017/54  depend on the state examination office in which you wish to complete your psychotherapy training (psychological psychotherapist or child and adolescent psychotherapist). Until now, Within the framework of the transitional regulation until 2032, it is possible to complete a Master's degree in Psychology from the University of Kassel in Hesse psychological psychotherapy training. You can also acquire additional credits in the clinical field (lectures of the Master's degree in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy) in order to achieve a certain number of credits required for your desired training institute.

If you started your Bachelor's degree after 01.09.2020, you can no longer obtain a license to practice and complete training with the M.Sc. in Psychology.

Please enquireindividually   at the responsible state examination office in advance to find out which training you can do(list of state examination offices). The federal state in which you would like to start training as a psychological psychotherapist is responsible. Please state both your Bachelor's degree and your future Master's degree in the preliminary inquiry. Please obtain the information in writing and keep it until the licensing examination.
