Compensation for disadvantages

An application for compensation for disadvantages can be made if there are special personal reasons for which you are not responsible and which have had a negative impact on your average grade or your waiting time (see Hessen Study Place Allocation Regulations: Selection procedure).

Before submitting such an application, please check self-critically whether it has a chance of success. Not every impairment that an applicant perceives as a "disadvantage" also justifies an improvement in the average grade or waiting time.

    Examples

    Improvement of the average grade

    • Prolonged absence from school due to illness during the last three years prior to obtaining the university entrance qualification (medical certificate),
    • Severe disability with a degree of disability of at least 50 (assessment notice from the pension office),
    • Pregnancy of the applicant during the last three years before obtaining the university entrance qualification (medical certificate or birth certificate of the child),
    • Care of unprovided for underage siblings who lived with the applicant in the same household during the last three years before acquiring the higher education entrance qualification (birth certificates of the siblings),
    • Loss of a parent in the last three years before obtaining the higher education entrance qualification (death certificate of the parent and declaration of marital status at the time).

    Improvement of the waiting period

    • Similar to the above examples of justified applications to improve the average grade.

    Not usually recognized:

    • Working during the school years in the parental household, business or company without being forced to do so by an emergency situation
    • Illness of the parents
    • Relocation of the parents before the last three years before obtaining the university entrance qualification
    • Participation in an exchange program

    Procedure

An application for compensation for disadvantages must be submitted during the online application in eCampus. If the application is accepted, the applicant will take part in the normal selection for degree programmes or subjects with restricted admission like all other applicants - but with an improved average grade/score.

The normal procedure is explained here: Admission restrictions - Who gets a place?

Please note: The decisive factor is the performance in the school years of the upper secondary school that led to the acquisition of the university entrance qualification and not just the final examination, finals alone.

    Evidence

Privileged treatment compared to competing applicants can only be justified if the reasons and the extent to which an improvement in the average grade and waiting time is to be achieved can be credibly demonstrated.

You must therefore provide evidence of a particularly serious personal exceptional situation and its impact on the acquisition of the higher education entrance qualification. This exceptional situation can only relate to past or present circumstances.

You will need the following documents when applying for compensation for disadvantages:

    • Letter of justification(please upload the document during your online application in eCampus)
    • Relevant evidence, e.g. expert opinion.(please upload the documents during your online application in eCampus)

All circumstances outlined in the application must be supported by appropriate evidence, otherwise they cannot be taken into account in the decision.
The enclosed supporting documents must be presented so clearly that an external person can understand your arguments on the basis of the documents.

    Worth knowing

Unfortunately, it is not possible to check the reasons for compensation in advance. A binding assessment is only possible if a fully documented application for compensation for disadvantages has been submitted together with the application for admission.
