Educational science with integrated sustainability studies (Bachelor)

During your studies, you will deal with central questions of knowledge and education, upbringing and participation and examine these from a sustainability perspective. The degree program is based on the UNESCO Education 2030 Agenda and combines important topics of educational science with current challenges of sustainable development, such as global justice, social participation and structural inequalities.

In addition to the theoretical and empirical examination of educational processes, you will learn to critically analyze educational science issues in educational contexts. The focus is also on topics such as all-day schools, children's and human rights and international education systems.

The University of Kassel offers you a unique degree program in Germany that combines educational science with integrated sustainability studies. The educational science components focus on reflections informed by social theory .

The integrated sustainability studies offer you a broad selection of specializations in the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences. The course is part of the sustainability profile of the University of Kassel. Research and teaching in the field of sustainability is strengthened and further developed by the Kassel Institute for Sustainability.

With a Bachelor's degree in Educational Science with integrated sustainability studies, you will qualify for work in state, non-profit and private educational, support and educational institutions - for example in the field of all-day schools, extracurricular education or in cultural and social institutions.

You combine your expertise in educational science with a sustainability profile of your choice, which also opens up opportunities in education policy, international organizations or a subsequent Master's degree. Through the integrated internship and the combination of research and practice, you can develop your personal profile in a targeted manner.

A Master's degree - for example in educational science or other social sciences and humanities subjects - is also possible afterwards.

A mandatory internship of 420 hours and interdisciplinary project modules give you practical insights into professional fields in educational science.

International experience is possible as part of the internship or Bachelor's thesis through cooperation with international partner institutions or through programs such as Erasmus. Language courses and advice round off the program.

Your degree program is divided into two study elements: Educational Science (120 ECTS) and Sustainability Studies (60 ECTS). In the areas of "Fundamentals", "Empirical Research Approaches", "Conditions of Education" and "Orientation and Graduation", you will acquire in-depth knowledge of the theory, methods and practice of educational science.

The focus is on topics such as educational inequality, inclusion, all-day education and international educational processes. At the same time, you will take basic modules and specializations from integrated sustainability studies, such as environmental psychology, diversity, sustainability communication or human-nature relationships.

An interdisciplinary project module and the Bachelor's thesis complete your studies. The course lasts six semesters and leads to aBachelor of Arts (B.A.)degree. It is based on the core curriculum of the German Society for Educational Science (DGfE) and combines a scientific foundation with career-oriented practice.
