The Gender Studies study program at the University of Kassel was launched in the winter semester 2005/2006 as the Interdisciplinary Study Program in Women's and Gender Studies. It offers students and doctoral candidates from all disciplines the opportunity to take advantage of a structured and interdisciplinary range of courses in the field of gender studies. They can acquire skills in the scientific analysis of intersectional gender relations as well as in the investigation of power, domination and inequality relations.
The study program consists of two modules:
- Module 1: Theories and cultural constructions of gender
- Module 2: Gender relations and strategies for action
In order to obtain the certificate, participants must successfully complete a total of three courses (6 semester hours) with a graded examination. At least two different subjects in the program must be taken - one course in the student's own subject and one course from another subject.
In the winter semester, a lecture series is offered that provides an interdisciplinary introduction to gender studies. This is designed by lecturers from different subject areas and is accompanied by a tutorial in which students follow up on the lectures and discuss the readings. Participation in the lecture series is compulsory for all students on the program. In the summer semester, there is also a thematically specific lecture series or film/lecture series. These events are open to the public and participants of the study program can attend them as part of the study program. To date, over 20 such series of events have been organized, reflecting the diverse perspectives and interdisciplinary debates in gender studies.
Graduates of the study program receive a 12-credit certificate confirming their additional qualification in gender studies. Since its introduction, over 200 students have successfully completed the program and around 30 students enroll each year.
