Your questions - Our answers
At the start of the apprenticeship, you should have a secondary school leaving certificate (Realschulabschluss). Your grades in German, English, politics, economics and mathematics should be at least "satisfactory" or better.
During your training as an administrative assistant, you will specialize in a specific area. Depending on the authority, you will be trained in the area of local administration (e.g. municipalities, cities), in the area of state administration (e.g. universities, regional councils) or in the area of federal administration (e.g. Federal Office of Administration, Federal Office of Justice). At the University of Kassel, you will complete your training as an administrative assistant in the area of state administration. In concrete terms, this means that you will work for the state of Hesse and learn about many laws that must be observed and implemented to ensure the smooth running of the university. For example, you will learn how student assistants are allowed to work for the university and what needs to be observed.
You will attend the administrative seminar and vocational school together with other trainees, who may come from municipal or other state authorities. Here you will learn with a focus on local administration, for example how the budget works or how elections are conducted. If you decide to train with us, you will have the opportunity to look beyond the confines of local self-government and have a broad range of topics at the end of your training. To give you an insight into a local authority at the same time, you will do an internship there for several weeks during your training.
If you want to find out more about what you can expect to learn at vocational school, you can do so on the website of the Giessen Regional Council. Among other things, you can download the framework curriculum there. It contains the sequence and the specific topics of the individual learning fields that you will go through during your training.
Apprentices and trainees do not generally take part in mobile working. After completing their training, there is the option of mobile working upon request, provided that the respective activities and business operations allow it.
Flexitime applies in administration, the university library and the IT Service Center. In general, this allows you to organize your working hours of 40 hours per week independently. However, there are a few rules to observe. For example, the earliest possible start time is 6:00 am and the latest possible end time is 8:00 pm. However, when choosing your working hours, especially at the beginning, you should be guided by the working hours of your trainer. In this way, we can guarantee good supervision and training.
This depends on which department or subject area you are assigned to. In the finance department, it may be your job to check and post invoices, organize the procurement of office supplies or process the financing of research projects with the help of funds from third parties (so-called third-party funds). In the university payroll office, you would take care of payroll accounting. In addition to these two potential fields of work, there are many other areas in which you can be employed after your training.
If you are completing your training at the University of Kassel, you can take advantage of the diverse training programme offered by the Department of Strategic Human Resources and Organizational Development. The prerequisite for this is that the training is suitable for trainees and that this has been agreed with your current department.
Once you have completed your training, there are further development opportunities. These include, for example, the option of continuing your training to become an administrative specialist or completing a dual course of study at the Hessian University of Applied Sciences for Public Management and Security to obtain a Bachelor of Arts - Public Administration or Bachelor of Arts - Digital Administration.
The chance of being taken on after your apprenticeship is very high. This means that you don't have to worry about this as long as you perform well.
