Project presentation - "Burchard's Decree Digital"
In 2020, the research project 'Burchard's Decree Digital' began with the aim of producing the first critical edition of the decree of Bishop Burchard of Worms, which is considered one of the most influential collections of canon law of the 11th and 12th centuries. The work, comprising 20 books, was up-to-date and practice-oriented, which also explains its distribution in over 80 manuscripts. An edition of the work that meets modern standards was previously considered an almost impossible task.
With the help of digital techniques, the project funded by the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz is tackling this task with workstations at the Universities of Erlangen, Kassel and Mainz as well as numerous cooperation partners. At the same time, the project, which is scheduled to run for 18 years, aims to analyze the sources, editing, reception and cultural-historical significance of the work of the Bishop of Worms from multiple perspectives.
On 18.05.2021 from 18:30 to approx. 19:30 , the project team of "Burchards Dekret Digital" will offer an insight into the current work, to which you are all cordially invited. The event will be held online, please register by 16.05.2021 at
