Stellungnahme zur Demonstration am 15.5.2024

Heute versammelten sich rund 170 Personen zu einer propalästinensischen Kundgebung vor der Mensa am Holländischen Platz. Die Gruppe protestierte gegen das Kriegsgeschehen in Gaza. Die Polizei war anwesend, sah aber keinen Anlass, in das Geschehen einzugreifen. Die Veranstaltung blieb friedlich und löste sich gegen 14.30 Uhr auf. Da das Campusgelände juristisch als öffentlicher Raum bewertet wird, liegt die Zuständigkeit für die Entscheidung nicht bei der Universität, sondern bei der Stadt Kassel. Das zuständige Ordnungsamt sah keinen Anlass, diese Versammlung zu untersagen.

Protestkundgebungen, Versammlungen und auch die angemessene Äußerung zugespitzter, provokanter Positionen gehören zu einer lebendigen Debattenkultur auf dem Campus – hierbei sind Regeln einzuhalten und der Schutz der Mitmenschen ist oberstes Gebot. Studierende, Lehrende und Mitarbeitende müssen unabhängig von ihrer Hautfarbe, Nationalität, Religion, Ethnie etc., in Sicherheit und ohne Gefühle von Angst, Bedrohung und Einschüchterung am Campus tätig sein können. Die Hochschulleitung wendet sich gegen jede Art von Ausgrenzung und Diskriminierung.

Today, around 170 people gathered for a pro-Palestinian rally on campus Holländischer Platz. The group was protesting against the war in Gaza. Police was present but saw no reason to intervene. The event remained peaceful. The gathering ended around 2.30 pm. As the campus area is legally considered a public space, the responsibility for the decision does not lie with the university, but with the city of Kassel. The responsible public order office saw no reason to prohibit this assembly.

Protest rallies, assemblies and the appropriate expression of pointed, provocative positions are all part of a lively culture of debate on campus – nevertheless, rules must be observed and the protection of fellow human beings has highest priorty. Students, teaching staff and employees must be able to work on campus in safety and without feelings of fear, threat or intimidation, regardless of their skin color, nationality, religion, ethnicity, etc. The presidential board of the University opposes all forms of exclusion and discrimination.
