Forschungskolloquium vom INCHER-Kassel: Using, communicating and discussing data – or perhaps not? Ethical conundrums in reporting the magnitude of a „problem“
Research ethics are increasingly being discussed in social sciences due to the growth of empirical research involving human interaction, micro-level data or even secret data. Empiricism, however, is not only important for research articles, but also for evidence-based policy making and public debate. While ideally, high-quality research provides the empirical base for these fields, much data that is discussed in politics and public does not necessarily conform to the methodological standards set in academia and science. This paper argues that the political and public use of such data is not only a methodological question, but can ultimately result in ethical problems.
