The Austrian architectural firm Innauer Matt Architekten ZT GmbH won 1st prize in the competition for the extension of the Kunsthochschule Kassel. The annex, a hall with around 600 square meters of floor space, will serve as a student 'exhibition laboratory' as well as for the production of large-scale artworks. It will be built in an inner courtyard of the listed building by Paul Friedrich Posenenske on the edge of the baroque Karlsaue. In doing so, the university is reverting to a site that Posenenske had developed in the 1990s for a possible extension.

The addition is expected to be prepared this year and completed by the end of 2018.

The jury included the president of the University of Kassel, Prof. Dr. Reiner Finkeldey, the rector of the art academy, Prof. Joel Baumann, and the architect Prof. Philipp Oswalt. The competition was managed by the ANP office from Kassel. The Kunsthochschule Kassel is a semi-autonomous division of the University of Kassel.
