For better health of unemployed people

Unemployed people are difficult for health promotion to reach. A Germany-wide study conducted by the University of Kassel with around 1,400 unemployed people is to examine which preventive measures can help. To this end, the university is receiving funding of more than 500,000 euros from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

JOBS training sessions for the unemployed will be launched throughout Germany in late summer. The training sessions are based on the "JOBS Program" developed by psychologists at the University of Michigan.  This program promotes social and emotional skills such as self-awareness, self-assessment and self-confidence among the unemployed. Studies in the U.S. and Finland have already shown that the program has significantly positive effects on health and improved the chances of integrating the unemployed into the labor market.

The study headed by Prof. Dr. Alfons Hollederer aims to find out whether these effects also work in the health and social insurance system and the labor market structures in Germany. The title of the research project is "JOBS Program Germany for Health Promotion among the Unemployed in the Community Living Environment with the Inclusion of Employment Promotion Institutions".

The GKV-Spitzenverband and the statutory health insurance funds, the Federal Employment Agency, the German County Association and the German Association of Cities are involved in the prevention program. The Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) coordinates the activities at 228 locations in the project.

Two research assistants are currently being sought for the project:
